I’m heading up to college in two days, and despite having something like a hundred CDs, I won’t have a stereo in my dorm room, so to save room I can only really bring up a few.
- LCD Soundsystem, This Is Happening, because it just sounds like what I want my life to sound like, which is something I can’t really explain, and lyrically I’d rather not be quite as miserable as James Murphy, but on the other hand I do love depressing lyrics, especially when the music’s as happy as I just said all this in my last post didn’t I.
- Modest Mouse, Good News For People Who Love Bad News. Fuck the haters - this is the best Modest Mouse album, hands down, and it reminds me of driving around Naugatuck with my stoner friends in Jaime’s cramped truck, which is something I’d like to remember.
- The self titled Fleet Foxes record, because listening to it is like snuggling into a warm cozy blanket that melts my cold, cynical heart.
- The Postal Service, Give Up, because it was one of the first gifts I ever got from my girlfriend, because it reminds me of her, and because, come on, Such Great Heights.
- The Olivia Tremor Control, Black Foliage, because it’s one of the most fully realized concept albums ever despite not actually having a concept, as far as I can tell.
- Deerhunter, Microcastle/Weird Era Continued, because Microcastle is just brilliant, and so underrated, and Weird Era is pretty great for what is essentially a bonus disk (yes I do know it is actually another whole album please don’t e-mail because I know more about Deerhunter than you do).
- R.E.M., Automatic for the People, because it’s Automatic for the People and how could I not bring it, really, what is wrong with you.
- Radiohead, OK Computer, mostly for Exit Music (For A Film). I actually have two versions of this album, luckily - I have the standard CD in a jewel case and I also have the super deluxe three disc edition from a few years ago, which I wouldn’t DREAM of bringing with me, so thank god for my insane purchasing habits and consumerism.
- The Beatles, The White Album, because it is my favorite Beatles album, because it is one of my favorite albums full stop, and because I still haven’t given the reissue the attention it deserves.
- and, predictably, Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over Sea, because it’s, quite simply, the most important record in the world to me, and I’d feel hollow without it.
Notable omissions -
- Nine Inch Nails, The Slip, because the case is sort of falling apart.
- Arcade Fire, Funeral, because I only have it on vinyl and I’m not bringing my turntable up just yet.
